Star Wars Director Rian Johnson Really Loved Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

At this point, it's probably easier to list who isn't a fan of Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The December film is a critical and audience darling that found its way onto many top 10 lists, including CinemaBlend's, and has been called the best superhero movie of the year and perhaps the best Spider-Man movie ever. Now you can add Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson's voice to that chorus. Take a look:

Rian Johnson may be a few weeks late to the inter-dimensional party, but now that he's seen Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, he has seen the light and joined the rest of us to bask in its magnificence. The Last Jedi director clearly loved the animated film, and beyond just seeing it as the best superhero movie of 2018 or the best Spider-Man movie ever, he went so far as to call it his favorite superhero movie ever. That is high praise indeed.

Even more than his own gushing opinion about the film being his favorite on Twitter, Rian Johnson actually called it next level. Furthermore, he thinks that it will be extremely influential moving forward. The director likened Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to the Velvet Underground, a rock band in the 60s and 70s that didn't enjoy major commercial success in its time but is now viewed as one of the most influential rock bands of all time.

The Velvet Underground and its avant-garde music were hugely influential to the rock and alternative genres, and the band went on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

This comparison shows that Rian Johnson thinks that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's influence will extend well beyond its own sequels and spinoffs, but to the superhero and comic book genre itself. And perhaps like the Velvet Underground, we may only come to understand the full scope of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse's influence years down the line with the benefit of hindsight.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was unique, inventive, incredibly funny, heartfelt and completely unafraid to go for it. The film showed the power of animation, daring to create something new, and trusting the audience to come along for the ride. Those are not bad lessons for the superhero genre and movies in general to look to. Who knows, maybe Rian Johnson himself will even take inspiration from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for one of his future films, like his Star Wars trilogy.

Fortunately, unlike the Velvet Underground, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks as though it is and will be appreciated in its time. A sequel and a spinoff film are already in the works and Spider-Verse has enjoyed commercial success, crossing $133 million domestic and nearing $300 million worldwide.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has already begun to win some awards too. At this past weekend's Golden Globe Awards, the Sony film beat out category mainstays Disney and Pixar to win the Best Animated Motion Picture award.

The Rock Has An Idea For A Movie With Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt has become a massive movie star in recent years as he's become part of more than one major franchise, but he has yet to co-star with another major movie star, Dwayne Johnson. Recently, the Rampage star was congratulating Avengers: Infinity War for kicking the crap out of his movie Rampage at the box office, when he mentioned that fans are telling him he should make a movie with Star-Lord himself Chris Pratt. Johnson says he always listens to the fans, and that he actually has an idea for something the two of them could do together. Check out his comments below.

It's not hard to imagine why fans would love to see Dwayne Johnson and Chris Pratt in a movie together. Both are huge stars who have tremendous screen presence. Both can handle action as well as comedy with equal skill. The only potential problem that I can see with these two in a movie together is the pair trying to one-up each other to see who could be funnier.

While The Rock says he has an idea, his Instagram video cuts off at that point, so we have no idea what sort of idea he has. The easiest idea could be considering Chris Pratt for a role in one of Dwayne Jonhosn's many upcoming movies. It's probably too late to add him in a significant role in something like the Hobbes and Shaw Fast and Furious spinoff or Jungle Cruise, both of which are expected to start shooting soon. Maybe there's a potential role in the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, that we know is planned for late 2019.

Of course, considering how busy Dwayne Johnson keeps himself, he must have countless movies that are in very early stages of development that we don't even know about yet. Perhaps one of those has the potential to be a vehicle for the two actors to share the screen together. Maybe there's a script that Johnson was considering doing, if only he could find the right co-star.

Unfortunately, the likelihood of seeing the pair in a superhero movie together, the most popular current genre, would seem to be the least likely scenario. The two are working on opposite sides of the fence as Chris Pratt is obviously firmly entrenched in Marvel and Dwayne Johnson is set to be DC's Black Adam, if and when that character ever makes his debut in the DC universe.

Of course, we have no idea if Chris Pratt is as interested in this pairing as Dwayne Johnson apparently is, but if he's game, maybe there is a future buddy movie starring these two in our future. I'd certainly buy tickets.

The Tomorrow Man Trailer: John Lithgow As An Obsessive Doomsday Prepper

So often are romantic comedies about young love all you need is Netflixs heartthrob Noah Centineo and a fashionable it girl to star. Upcoming indie The Tomorrow Man instead focuses on the blossoming romance of two 70-somethings, played by the incredibly talented John Lithgow and Blythe Danner, as they start dating and learn each other of their skeletons in the closet. Thich includes Lithgows character having a doomsday bunker all set up, because its important to show your girl youre prepared should the world end! Check out the trailer below:

Wow, anyone else getting some emotional Up flashbacks? The romance from Bleeker Street will be the debut feature-length film for writer/director Noble Jones, and features some seasoned talent from John Lithgow (who will soon star in the Pet Sematary remake) and Blythe Danner, who have not yet worked together until this film.

The Tomorrow Man trailer opens with Ronnie Meisner (Danner) catching the attention of Ed Hemsler (Lithgow) at a grocery store. Ed approaches the woman in the parking lot and drums up the courage to ask her out on a coffee date. As they start spending time with another, it looks like Ronnie is a bit of a matter-of-fact girlfriend who says it like it is. For instance she not shy about expressing her interest in her war documentaries.

During another one of their meetings Ed asks her if he can answer a question for her about himself, and she gives him a bit of a stand-offish I dont know what I want to know yet But shell let him know when she does. It makes for a cute-but-awkward start to their romance. Things start to pick up in the trailer when Ed decides to show her his secret supply of Spam and all kinds of food and supplies, secretly locked away.

After that, the two seem to start really hitting it off. (Guess obsessive doomsday prepping was really her thing?) Ronnie has a walk of shame and Ed introduces her as his girlfriend to his son and his wife. We then find that Ed seems to be obsessed with preparing for the future where his doomsday supply can be of use and Ronnie is struck with the tragedy of her own daughters death.

The emotional core of the film that premiered at Sundance in January seems to lie in the intersection of the couples polar opposite focuses in life. Ed is looking toward tomorrow as Ronnie is always looking back at her treasured past when her daughter was alive and well. The highlight of the trailer is when Ronnie says You only think about tomorrow but Im here right now! to him as he lays in a hospital bed.

The Tomorrow Man looks to be an emotional and eccentric romance. Were certainly curious if Eds doomsday supply will factor into the films plot line. The movie will hit theaters on May 29.
