Michael Bay Can't Help Himself, Circles Another Blockbuster Starring Killer Robots

While Michael Bay is well known for movies like Bad Boys and The Rock, from 2007 to last year, most of his time was dedicated to the Transformers franchise. He directed the first five movies about the robots in disguise, with The Last Knight marking his final entry in the film series (though he is credited as a producer on Bumblebee). However, it would appear that Bay isn't done with robots altogether, as he's now reportedly lining up Robopocalypse as one of his next projects.

Robopocalypse, based on the book of the same name by Daniel H. Wilson, has been in development for years, and originally the plan was for Steven Spielberg to direct it. However, the project been delayed several times, and with Spielberg apparently no longer able to make time for it, Variety reports that he's "hand picked" Michael Bay to sit in the director's chair in his place. Before tackling Robopocalypse, though, Bay intends to helm 6 Underground, which is based off a script written by Deadpool duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Once Bay is done with 6 Underground (which is aiming for a summer 2019 release), then he'll move to Robopocalypse, which Spielberg is still attached to produce.

It would be easy enough to classify Michael Bay as the Hollywood director you turn to for handling stories about killer robots (if Tim Miller wasn't already directing the new Terminator movie, I'd wonder if Bay was interested in tackling that), but in all seriousness, Transformers and Robopocalypse are different. The Robopocalypse novel was about a sentient A.I. called Archos R-14 that took over all electronic networks devices, including robots, to destroy humanity. Archos R-14 is almost completely successful, but remnants of humanity and robots that avoided being controlled by the A.I. come together for one last stand. Oh, and there are no humanoid machines that turn into vehicles in Robopocalypse... that's important to mention, too.

Assuming that Michael Bay finalizes a deal to direct Robopocalypse, you can be sure that like the original novel and many of Bay's other movies, it will be packed with action. However, while the Transformers movies were PG-13 beat-em-up romps, I imagine Robopocalypse's action will be more intense, potentially pushing the cinematic adaptation into R-rated territory. It's also worth mention that it as recently reported Michael Bay was being looked at to direct Lobo for Warner Bros, though judging by this news about Robopocalypse and 6 Underground, it sounds like DC's movie about the Main Man isn't one of his priorities, assuming he does indeed add that to his plate with everything else.

The 10 Most Anticipated Movie Trailers Of 2018

This was always going to be a crowded year at the box office. Avengers: Infinity War, Ocean's Eight, and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are just a few pf the blockbusters on our radar. But there are some who are on our watch list that still haven't given us a proper trailer, or even a single look into what's going on with their production. It's those films we're here to discuss, and the following 10 pictures are ones we're really looking forward to scoping out, yet we'd be even more excited about them if we could see some actual footage. (Hint hint, Hollywood.)

The First PurgeWhile we've gotten an announcement trailer for The First Purge, there was no real footage on display in the riff on a standard political ad. With the prequel nature of the project in play, as well as the surprise unveiling of cast member Marisa Tomei in the film's cast, it'd be nice to see both of those aspects at work in a longer form trailer.

The Equalizer 2For as steadily as The Equalizer 2 has progressed in its production, we haven't even been given a look at the film's poster, much less any footage. Considering Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington's latest reunion was shifted to the rather bullish release date of July 20th, you would have thought a small teaser would have been in the can, at least. Here's hoping we see something soon, otherwise we might start to worry about this one.

The MegA giant prehistoric shark versus Jason Statham and a team of experts. That's what The Meg is promising movie-goers who may not be familiar with the Steve Alten authored series of sci-fi adventure novels. But to those who have read the books, there's the typical anxiety of how the world of these stories will be brought to live in cinematic color. Both camps are waiting to see a trailer in action, and both have really good reasons to do so.

The PredatorThere's still plenty of time for The Predator to start its engines and tease its fans into an absolute frenzy, as September 14th will see the film's debut. But when your fans are a strong and long line of devotees that find themselves excited for the return of Shane Black's writing to the franchise, you can bet that the sooner you show off some action and dialogue from The Predator to the public, the stronger the buzz will begin to grow.

The NunFor as young as The Conjuring franchise is, it's certainly wasted no time putting out two different spin-offs into the world. While Annabelle is two films strong at the moment, The Nun is just starting with this summer's offering. With an extremely profitable franchise still in action, the excitement for a glimpse at Corin Hardy's follow-up centered around the titular menace featured in The Conjuring 2 only needs some tangible visuals to deliver this film into a rather lucrative debut.

Goosebumps 2The jury is kinda still out on Goosebumps 2. We don't know whether or not Jack Black's R.L. Stine will be back for the ride. We're still waiting for confirmation that the film's new subtitle is Goosebumps: Slappy's Revenge (or the rumored: Goosebumps: Horrorland). And since news has been a bit scarce as of late, we're wondering if the film's still on course for an October 12th release.

Halloween (2018)If director David Gordon Green's Halloween sequel were just another entry in the canon's continuing adventures, we'd still be pretty interested. That said, it's the fact that Green and co-writer Danny McBride have wiped the slate clean and crafted a direct sequel to the original film that really has folks talking about this new return to Haddonfield. Seeing Jamie Lee Curtis's Laurie Strode alive and well again in a movie theater, even if it's just for a sneak peek, is something that is also all the more exciting because of this daring decision. Now, let's see a teaser!

First ManAbout this time last year, Damian Chazelle and Ryan Gosling were among those who saw La La Land's dreams of taking home the prize for Best Picture both become realized, and ultimately dashed. So naturally, with their Neil Armstrong biopic First Man slated for release this October, they're going to want to leave as best of an impression on the future awards voters as they can. Putting out a killer teaser in the next couple of weeks could be the thing that does the trick, as they'd be getting ahead of most of the competition by doing so.

Creed 2While we're still shaky on whether or not Creed 2 will make its 2018 release date, we're still amped to see the son of Apollo Creed face off against the son of Ivan Drago in the ring. As Michael B. Jordan is currently blazing a trail on screens as the sympathetic villain Killmonger in Black Panther, you can bet fans thoughts will turn to when the first look at this flick will be hitting our screens.

Holmes & WatsonA decade ago, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly last wowed audiences with their anarchic brand of comedy in Step Brothers - a movie still held in good regard to this day. And yet, it's taken them so long to make another film together, with the drought ending in the release of Holmes & Watson this Christmas. Obviously, the sooner this trailer debuts, the sooner you can stop people from blasting "Boats N' Hoes" on repeat ad infinitum.

For the first decade of its existence, the Marvel Cinematic Universe made itself king both at the box office and in the hearts of the moviegoing public, but it went home empty handed every time on Oscar night. Then, a year ago, Ryan Coogler's Black Panther hit theaters, and Marvel knew it had something special on its hands - something that could win it an honor box office success can't buy. That instinct proved true because Marvel is having a great night at the Oscars.

At the 91st Academy Awards, Black Panther picked up its first Oscar. Then it went ahead and picked up its second and third. Black Panther won its, and Marvel's, first Oscar for Best Costume Design, for Ruth E. Carter's work bringing Wakanda to life through the clothes of its people. Then the film followed that up with another Oscar, this one for Best Production Design for Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart, followed by one for Ludwig Gransson for Best Original Score.

So after a decade without the highest recognition in the industry, Marvel now has three Oscars under its belt.

Marvel was ready for this night and so were the recipients of the Oscars. Ruth E. Carter, who had previously been nominated for her costume design on Malcolm X and Amistad proved that the third time was the charm and she delivered with a great speech that thanked everyone, was entertaining and well-prepared and even incorporated a fun reference to the film itself talking about how expensive it is to add vibranium to costumes.

While Ruth E. Carters speech was fun, Hannah Bleacher, who did the production design for the film alongside set decorator Jay Hart, delivered a heartfelt and incredibly emotional and inspiring speech about being stronger. She gave a ton of credit to Ryan Coogler, who though he was not nominated for Best Director, his presence has been felt throughout Black Panthers wins. Ludwig Gransson kept his speech short and sweet for his first Oscar win, helping with this brisk, frill-less ceremony.

The wins really highlight the achievement of Marvels film in creating a country and a culture. The Costume and Production Design awards honor how well the team of Black Panther brought the wonderful world of Wakanda to life to feel like a tangible place with its own history and culture. They created a technological utopia that is both futuristic and deeply African. And the score gave that world an audible texture and beauty.

For those of you keeping score at home, Marvel has now matched and surpassed the Oscar precedent set by rival DCEUs Suicide Squad. This is a huge milestone for Marvel and although it may be overdue, is still just as sweet. It was also very cool hearing Kevin Feige get thanked on the stage at the Dolby Theatre. He is the architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, perhaps the grandest and most successful experiment in cinematic history.

Marvel knew it had something on its hands with Black Panther and it put together an Oscar campaign to champion the film and that has proven a worthwhile endeavor. It wasn't a clean sweep for Black Panther though as it lost out on Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing to Bohemian Rhapsody and Best Original Song to A Star is Born's "Shallow." It also couldn't do the impossible and win Best Picture, with that award going to Green Book.

Black Panther wasnt the only Marvel movie with a nomination tonight. Avengers: Infinity War was nominated for Best Visual Effects but, in what is sure to be lamented by Thanos fans out there, it lost out to First Man. So its been a good night for Marvel at the Oscars but for unknown reasons the special effects-driven MCU still remains statueless on the VFX front.

Despite that snub, Marvel should feel nothing but proud for how this Oscar night turned out. Marvel won three out of eight awards its films were nominated for, with Black Panther snagging three statues for Marvel. It was about a decade ago, when the MCU was in its infancy, that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight was famously snubbed a Best Picture nomination. Now this year we had a superhero film nominated for Best Picture and multiple other awards, going home with three of them. That's progress.
