Charlies Angels Director Elizabeth Banks Explains Why She Cast Kristen Stewart

Its been a few months since director Elizabeth Banks found her leading ladies for the Charlies Angels reboot. Kristen Stewart was the biggest name cast, while the movie will be fleshed out by The Athenas Ella Balisnka and Aladdins Naomi Scott. But how did the movie decide on its three leads? If you ask Banks, she knew who she wanted from the get-go.

Im somebody who believes that 90% of the job is casting. I mean, Im an actor so of course I believe that [laughs]. But I really do believe that is key. I want to see from Robert Downey Jr. play Tony Stark; I dont want to see anyone else do it. I want to see Kristen Stewart be a Charlies Angel and I didnt want to see [anyone else do it.]

Speaking at a CinemaCon luncheon with Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher, Booksmart director Olivia Wilde and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Elizabeth Banks revealed that her acting background has made her particular about who she casts in her movies. In the case of Charlies Angels, she saw Kristen Stewart in the role and then worked to pursue her until she said yes to the gig.

Its interesting, because I dont automatically associate Kristen Stewart with action heroine even though she has taken roles in action films before, including Twilight, Snow White and the Huntsman and the upcoming Underwater (a.k.a. the movie Kristen Stewart shaved her head for). But Banks had it in her head that Stewart was/is an Angel and got what she wanted in the end.

In terms of how Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott were cast, Elizabeth Banks also said at CinemaCon that she wanted women Kristen Stewart would bounce off of in incredible ways, noting,

I wanted her to surprise people and be on a journey. I wanted to give her other Angels that were not anything like her so that she could pull energy from and bounce off of and work off of. Because its the dynamism in the scenes that makes her really fun.

The director may not have landed 100% of the hopefuls she wanted, however. Early on before Charlies Angels went into production, it was reported Lupita Nyongo was circling the project and that ultimately did not pan out. At the time, Stewart was also mentioned as a hopeful and that casting did end up coming together.

Elizabeth Banks has previously talked about how this time around Charlies Angels will go beyond the three badass women at the head of the project, noting:

It's not just three. Women across the entire globe are connected and helping each other.

So, well have to see how the story plays out on the big screen and whether or not K-Stew was the right fit. Ultimately, though, it looks as if Elizabeth Banks ended up exactly with the cast she wanted. Weve already nabbed a first look at that cast so take a look if you haven't already.

Denzel Washington has put on a number of remarkable performances over the course of his career, but few compare to what's on display in Antoine Fuqua's Training Day. It's an inarguably iconic turn, with the role of Alonzo Harris winning the star his second Academy Award, and it has quickly become a pop culture staple. It's amazing to think that it's been nearly 17 years since its release, and I recently had the chance to reflect on it with the actor and director:

Training Day was the first collaboration between Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua, but it created a bond that has since led to the making of three more movies. The most recent is The Equalizer 2, a direct sequel to the film they made together in 2014, and it was during the Los Angeles press day for the action feature that I asked them about their shared past. Being a huge fan of the 2001 cop drama, and having the opportunity to sit down with the two men, I couldn't help but ask about the experience, and how they look back on it.

One of the first things that sprung to Denzel Washington's mind was simply the atmosphere in which Training Day was shot -- namely the rough-and-tumble neighborhood surrounding the Palmwood Dr. cul-de-sac in Los Angeles. Apparently much of it has been improved in the last decade-and-a-half, but Antoine Fuqua drove home the fact that what audiences saw in the movie is very much a representation of what the area used to be like (and, frankly, that doesn't sound like a super fun environment in which to shoot a film.

Following up, I specifically inquired about what has become the one line with which the entirety of Training Day has become synonymous: "King Kong ain't got nothin on me!" It's weirdly a quote that Alonzo Harris screams at the top of his lungs right at the time that his defeat has become clear, but Denzel Washington sells the hell out of it, and for just a brief moment you question if he perhaps does have an escape from his inevitable deadly face-off with the Russian mobsters. It's the kind of magic you'd think might be recognized right on set, but Washington explained that wasn't really the case. Instead, he was just enjoying the hell out of playing the role and letting his id go wild. Said the actor,

I was just having a good time! Just around the way... it was like, 'Oh, I can do or say anything!'

The years since have seen Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua reteam on The Equalizer and the remake of The Magnificent Seven, and soon The Equalizer 2 will be heading to a theater near you.
