Marvels James Gunn Fires Back At Angry Star Wars Fans

There are few movie properties quite as iconic and beloved as Star Wars. The galaxy far, far away has been passed down across generations, leading to a mass of diehard fans who will gladly wait in line for each new release. But since George Lucas gave up control of the property to Disney, the fans seem to be taking umbrage with various filmmaking choices by directors like J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson. The Last Jedi has taken a ton of backlash from the community, who don't agree with the liberal changes to the canon. The hate has gotten so deafening that some fans are trying to remake the movie entirely. Now Guardians of the Galaxy director/writer James Gunn has spoken up about the toxic fandom, dropping the mic on Twitter with:

James Gunn has had enough with angry Star Wars fans, who seem to be getting more volatile as Disney releases each new blockbuster. Because while film criticism is common (especially with iconic properties), there seems to be an extra level of hatred hurling toward everyone involved in The Last Jedi. That doesn't include Gunn himself, but he's got friends involved with the franchise, and has become used to internet trolls.

James Gunn's Tweet comes from the recent increase in volatile Star Wars reactions. While The Last Jedi was released back in December, the movie has only continued to get hate in the following months. Actress Kelly Marie Tran was shown particular hate on social media for her portrayal of newcomer Rose Tico. In fact, she has since left Twitter, inspiring Rian Johnson, Mark Hamill, and more to come to her defense. Tico still hasn't returned to Twitter, although promotion for Episode IX will likely change that.

While plenty of Star Wars fans had issues with the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the most common criticism seems to be that Rian Johnson took too many risks. He threw the rule book out as fast as Luke threw away his lightsaber, with changes being made to Force Ghosts, Leia's abilities, and more. While fans have a right to be gobsmacked by the film's contents, they seemed to have the exact opposite issues with The Force Awakens. When Episode VII came out in 2015, there were plenty who said it was too similar to A New Hope. So what does the community want? More or less risks from Star Wars filmmakers?

Despite fan backlash, Disney is showing no signs of slowing down the Star Wars franchise. Solo: A Star Wars Story arrived in theaters a few weeks ago, while J.J. Abrams will complete the current trilogy with Episode IX. There's also Rian Johnson's developing trilogy, so Star Wars fans may have to deal with more divisive sequels in the near future.

Why John Cena Joined The Transformers Franchise With Bumblebee

In recent years, John Cena has been following in the footsteps of fellow former WWE wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson with a quite successful career in acting. After stealing the show in 2015's Trainwreck, Cena has nabbed starring roles in the animated film Ferdinand and the comedy Blockers. John Cena's most recent role in Transformers spinoff, Bumblebee, demanded that the actor do a lot more than just deliver laughs, and he was more than up for the task. Here's what he had to say about what drew him to join the action franchise:

I've always wanted to show a little more dimension and play a conflicted character. What's fun about doing a prequel is that we get to delve into the unanswered questions from the earlier movies. This takes place years before Sector 7 has become the established institution it is when we meet Agent Simmons in the first film. It was highly classified then, so you can only imagine how secretive it is 20 years earlier.

John Cena explained his reasoning for hopping onto the latests Transformers flick while speaking to the INQUIRER.net. In Bumblebee, Cena plays Agent Burns, a Sector 7 military officer who spends much of the film chasing down the yellow Transformer. In preparation for the role, Cena created a backstory for the character to add dimension to Agent Burns. He describes him as a lone-wolf military professional who has risen up in the ranks through the ranks. Burns' motivations are always in the best interest of helping the nation and world, but he can sometimes get tunnel vision.

Director Travis Knight said John Cena was a "revelation" to him, because although he already knew he could deliver on the comedy front from his previous work, his role in Bumblebee made it necessary to help deliver some heartfelt moments in addition to being this badass intimidating military officer.

After five Transformers films directed by Michael Bay, Bumblebee is a different kind of movie for the franchise as it is helmed by the Kubo and the Two Strings' director and focuses heavily on injecting heart. The action flick is set in 1987 and sees a younger Bumblebee teaming up with a teenager named Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld, who form a close friendship.

Bumblebee is the most critically-acclaimed Transformers film to date, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 79% audience score. The spinoff opened beside two major releases Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns as the overall highest-rated of the three, though opened at No. 3 in its first weekend in the prime holiday slot.

In its almost two weeks in theaters, Bumblebee has made $157 million worldwide with a $135 million budget. Bumblebee will need to score a lot more cash while it's in theaters to be as lucrative as the other Transformers entries.

Why Black Panther Was A Different Experience For Marvel Veterans Andy Serkis And Martin Freeman

In the comics, Ulysses Klaue and Everett Ross have long been categorized as Black Panther characters -- but on the big screen they actually appeared long before the king of Wakanda's solo movie. Their roles are certainly expanded in writer/director Ryan Coogler's film, but they respectively made their Marvel Cinematic Debuts in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. This has led to some diverse experiences for actors Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman -- and I recently had the chance to chat with them both about the contrast. Said Serkis,

I had literally a couple of days with Joss [Whedon]. It was establishing the character, and he was creating certainly a paradigm for that character, which was he's a man who wheels and deals with governments; who is an arms dealer; who is incredibly selfish. And then what Ryan did when I came into the movie with Klaue was actually looking at his slightly more unhinged, slightly madder side - the funner side! The fun potential you could have with a dangerous character.

Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman -- who will forever be connected thanks to their roles in The Hobbit -- were paired together for the Black Panther press day late last month, which offered me the opportunity to ask them simultaneously about their past Marvel Studios experiences. Discussing his first time playing Ulysses Klaue, Serkis offered that it did a nice job putting down the groundwork for the character, but followed up saying that Ryan Coogler really let him lean into the more chaotic side of the villain's mind.

As for Martin Freeman, his answer was a bit different because his time on the set of Captain America: Civil War apparently wasn't really as in-depth as Andy Serkis' was making The Avengers: Age of Ultron. And thinking back on the film, that makes sense. Freeman basically has two big scenes in the blockbuster, but serves more as a government figurehead than anything (not unlike Clark Gregg's Agent Phil Coulson was in Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe). Answering my question about comparing his past Marvel experience to Black Panther, the actor said,

In all honestly, and in fairness to the Russos who I respect tremendously, I had comparatively so little to do in Civil War, [so] I got to know Ryan a lot more. I liked everything about working with Ryan. He was very low key, very committed, hard-working - he knew what he wanted. But he also was very trusting of us, wasn't he? He wanted the scenes to be open and new, and for us to bring whatever we wanted to bring.
